ARCTERYX Rampart Pant 32-inch inseam - Men's Pants & shorts 30 Sequoia Review

I got these to replace a pair of the discontinued but nearly identical Candidate pants from Arc'Teryx. These are not them. The Arc'Teryx Candidate Pant used the slick and stretchy but super tough Tweave material. Looked like dress slacks, but took a beating like canvas. These use the same materials (polyester & spandex), but in a different blend and weave (94/6 Rampart, vs. 84/16 Candidate).

These are closer in feel and weave to the material of the North Face Horizon Peak pants. Very lightweight, kind of a crepe feeling material. They have a matte finish rather than the near sheen of their predecessor. Still stretchy and durable, though. A bit more snag-resistant actually. These add the Archaeopteryx bird fossil stitched in monochrome on the pocket. Displays the quality with being overtly brand conscious.

Design improvements include a double snap at the waist, a stronger zipper, and thicker belt loops; on the Candidate these were all very weak points.

The articulated knees and gusseted crotch make for a very versatile and athletically oriented pant. The flat cargo pocket design continues and the rear hip pockets are improved with a better overlapping flap to keep your wallet from falling out without using a snap or button.

The fabric is a bit crinkly, so they don't look quite as sharp, and they're a bit noisier. Not as good if you need to be stealthy in your movements. But they still look alright for wear about the town. Not designed specifically as wind or water resistant, but they do a decent job. Mist and light rain bead and roll off. When they do wet-through, they are slightly quicker to dry than the Candidate.

Overall, these have some great design improvements over the Candidate. Without a doubt they are the better pants for outdoor activity, which is what I bought them for. I just wish they were available in the incredible slick Tweave fabric that worked so well as a transitional piece for both office AND outdoor wear. You could've worn the Candidate pants to pull a security detail at the White House. Probably not so much with these.

Can't really complain about these, though. They are still about the best all around outdoor pants available in a fully synthetic blend. That doesn't keep me from missing things about their predecessor. 5 out of 5 stars.

Bailey Johnny Straw Braid Hat (Medium, Ivory) Review

This is a reasonably well made hat (small imperfections) and it has worked perfectly for its intended purpose, which was being able to wear it on hot (sweaty) days and to the beach without worry. I have to say that my wife even mistook it for my mid-level panama, so it looks very nice even close up. It did run larger than I am used to. I chalked it up to no headband, so I slipped one on and it fit perfect. The band also shortened the look of the crown. On a side note I am a looong oval, but since the hat is polypropylene I pinched the front a little and got the rough shape of a diamond crown ( a longer variant of the pork-pie). I am very happy with this hat and recommend it highly.
